Tactical Flashlights: A Comprehensive Guide

I currently own about 10 handheld flashlights. All of them are tactical flashlights. A tactical flashlight is a powerful, durable flashlight that is designed for use in a variety of tactical situations. These flashlights are typically made with high-quality materials and construction, and they often feature multiple brightness settings, strobe modes, and other features that make them ideal for law enforcement, military, and self-defense applications. I prefer flashlights built from aluminum and anodized black. Some are made of plastic. Don’t buy those.

In this guide, we will discuss the different types of tactical flashlights available, as well as the features to look for when choosing a tactical flashlight. We will also provide some tips on how to use a tactical flashlight safely and effectively.

Types of Tactical Flashlights

There are many different types of tactical flashlights available, each with its own unique set of features. Some of the most common types of tactical flashlights include:

Handheld flashlights: These are the most basic type of tactical flashlight. They are typically small and lightweight, making them easy to carry and use. Handheld flashlights are often used for tasks such as searching for objects in the dark, inspecting crime scenes, and self-defense. This is the unit I purchase and use the most regularly.

Weapon-mounted flashlights: These flashlights are designed to be mounted on a weapon, such as a handgun or rifle. Weapon-mounted flashlights provide hands-free illumination, which can be very helpful in tactical situations. I do have several of these and they come in quite handy when it is dark.

Headlamps: Headlamps are worn on the head, which frees up your hands for other tasks. Headlamps are often used for activities such as hiking, camping, and search and rescue. Probably my favorite time of portable light, but rarely are they “tactical.”

Strobe flashlights: Strobe flashlights emit a rapid, flashing light that can be disorienting to an attacker. Strobe flashlights are often used for self-defense.

Features to Look for in a Tactical Flashlight

When choosing a tactical flashlight, there are several important features to consider. These include:

Brightness: The brightness of a tactical flashlight is measured in lumens. A higher lumen output means that the flashlight will be brighter. For most tactical applications, a flashlight with at least 300 lumens is recommended. I wouldn’t buy a light under 1000 lumens. Many companies from China will lie about their output. For instance, they will say 150,000 lumens but they’re probably 1500.

Run time: The run time of a tactical flashlight is the amount of time that it can operate on a single charge. For tactical applications, a flashlight with at least 2 hours of run time is recommended. Some will last upwards of 8 hours on a single charge. Look for flashlights that have a 3000 mAh battery or larger.

Durability: Tactical flashlights need to be able to withstand a lot of wear and tear. Look for a flashlight that is made from high-quality materials and construction. Pick aluminum. Period.

Waterproof rating: Tactical flashlights should be waterproof so that they can be used in wet or rainy conditions. Look for a flashlight with a waterproof rating of at least IPX4 (splash proof). I don’t buy any less than IP67. I prefer IP7, but not all have this level of water and dust protection.

Impact resistance: Tactical flashlights should be able to withstand being dropped from a height of at least 1 meter. Look for a flashlight with an impact resistance rating of at least IK07. Your flashlight should be tough. Drop it when you buy it. If it breaks, return it and buy another. If it doesn’t, enjoy the new wear mark as part of its journey with you.

How to Use a Tactical Flashlight Safely

I’m not a big safety guy, but there are some common sense rules. When using a tactical flashlight, it is important to practice safe use habits. These include:

  • Don’t look into the light when it’s on (you could cause severe eye damage)

  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid shining the flashlight in people's eyes (especially the really bright ones. They are too bright to be in anyone’s face except an attacker).

  • Do not use the flashlight to start a fire (some claim to be able to do this and actually can, but it’s risky and only in emergencies).

  • Store the flashlight in a safe place away from children and pets (yeah…ok…)

Conclusion

A tactical flashlight is a valuable tool for anyone who wants to be prepared for any situation. When choosing a tactical flashlight, it is important to consider the features that are important to you. With so many different types and models of tactical flashlights available, you are sure to find one that is perfect for your needs. I have a bunch of them listed on my Amazon storefront. My favourites are the smaller ones.
